A phrase very commonly heard in the fire service, EMS and to some extent the medical community is, “I’ve been doing this for a long time.”
This phrase is usually a response to someone questioning the wisdom of the speaker’s decisions or actions, as if seniority and longevity automatically translate into competence and common sense.
My response is, “Then you should know better.”
Or, “So you’ve been doing it wrong for a long time?”
The self-proclaimed “veterans” who are always quick to point out their tenure are usually the ones who are morons. The good ones, on the other hand, usually don’t say a thing.
