First baby

Code 3 for baby not breathing.

As usual, it’s really baby spitting up.

Several concerned but relatively calm adults are in the room. The mother is crying and hands me a 2-month-old who is fine as can be.

“I was feeding him and he coughed and had trouble breathing and turned red!”

“He looks fine.”

“LOOK! HE’S DOING IT AGAIN!”

“Doing what? He looks fine.”

“YOU DON’T SEE IT? THERE!”

“Uh, no. Maybe he frowned a little…”

I put the baby on my lap as I sit on the floor, bouncing him gently.

“He’s fine.”

At this point, I hear a murmur in the background. It’s coming from us, the crews. We’re all looking at each other mumbling to each other.

“First baby?” “First baby?” “First baby.” “First baby.” “Mm hmm.” “First baby.” “Mmm.” “First baby.”

I turn to the mother, “First baby?”

“Yes.”

“Your son is fine.”
