In fact, I don’t know a lot of things.

A goofball who looks like Leo from the That 70s Show comes to the front of the station.

“Hey, I need some help.”

“O-kaaaaaaaaay?”

Please don’t be a medical call. Please don’t be a medical call.

“Do you know where ABC House is in City D? I’m trying to catch a bus to get down there.”

City D is 20 miles away. I don’t know the first thing about it.

“Umm… no, I’m sorry. I don’t.”

“It’s a drug abuse treatment place.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t know anything about it, and I’m not familiar with City D.”

“Forget it.”

Alright fucker, don’t be mad at me that I don’t know how to get there. It doesn’t look like you know either. Besides, I kept my nose clean. You should try it someday.

The press is not impressed

A much-circulated story out of Northern California was brought to my attention today. Basically, it was a about a police chief who, unhappy with inaccuracies in a story about to be published, sent his public information officer at 12:45am to the residence of the reporter in question in “an overzealous attempt to make sure that accurate information is put out.”

What’s outrageous to me is not what the chief did. Rather, it’s what he did not do, i.e. he somehow did not remember that it’s pretty much a given that the media gets nothing about emergency services and emergency responses right.

Furthermore, laypeople have zero understanding about emergency services anyway, like this woman at 2:56 in this video of a Brooklyn fire. As if they have the attention span to remember the article for more than a few minutes afterward. So really, what’s the harm in letting some local reporter write his silly little story for the gullible readers of yet another struggling newspaper?

I liken the media to the crazy regular we transport all the time. He fidgets and rambles non-stop on the gurney. I leave him be and do my own thing in the jumpseat, away from him.

The parable of the drug addict*

A dropout drug addict calls 911 and demands narcotics. He says rude, ridiculous things and insults the crew. The crew ignores him and tells him to sit quietly on the gurney. He is brought to the ED, where he demands, again, narcotics. He says rude, ridiculous things and insults the staff. The staff ignores him and tells him to sit quietly in the waiting room. Not getting the attention he seeks, he slinks off into the night.

A dropout drug addict who hosts a national media program says rude, ridiculous things and insults people he disagrees with. No one reminds him that he’s a drug addict and tells him that people don’t care when drug addicts say ridiculous things and insult people.

*Lesson yet to be learned

Bicyclists and criminals

What do bicyclists and criminals have in common?

They both are marginalized sections of society who demand recognition but do little to earn their places in normal society.*

Bicyclists are marginalized on the road and demand recognition from vehicles. But they rarely obey traffic laws. In general, they do whatever they want on the road and inconvenience everyone else. And they blame vehicles for everything that happens, even though most of the time the bicyclists are at fault because they rarely obey traffic laws. That’s assuming they’re not running over pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Criminals are marginalized in normal society and demand recognition from regular people. But in general, they steal people’s cars, shoot other people and inconvenience everyone else. And they blame regular people for their plights – poverty, lack of opportunities, police brutality, etc. – even though most of the time the criminals are at fault because they’re stealing people’s cars and shooting other people. That’s assuming they’re not busy pointing guns at cops.

*Calm down – I’m just musing out loud. I ride bikes and I live and work near criminals. I’ve dodged plenty of bikes on the sidewalk and been victimized by criminals more than I’d like.
